BULLYING AND DEPRESSION
Kinza was interested in the ongoing refugee crisis and how people in refugee camps (such as in Calais) were effected by their past. She wanted to explore how even if some refugees made it into the UK, they can still be subject to discrimination for being different. She then integrated how this could lead to mental health problems such as depression and suicidal thoughts.
DOMESTIC ABUSE
As a group we then looked at another common social issue - domestic violence. We found that domestic abuse is an issue that films do not generally highlight which makes it an interesting topic to look into where we could explore how it could happen to anyone and how it has devastating effects on its victims.
POVERTY AND DRUGS
Suraiya took inspiration from the London Riots (2011) and chose to explore the issues of how the riots effected the lives of civilians. She chose to think about the secondary effects of the riots and how they could have had a knock on effect on people who weren't even involved in them. Her idea was to follow a young man, who wasn't involved in the riots, and how they caused him to end up on the streets with nothing to his name.
GANGS
Mustafe wanted to look at how the riots could influence the young people in the area at the time and how they were so easily swept up with the dangerous nature of the riots. He talked about how many people who took part in the riots were quite young and were influenced by other around them which is when he used the example of how gangs could easily influence young people to join them for personal gain.
ISLAMOPHOBIA
Kayleigh then brought up the topic of Islamophobia as she took inspiration from the France terror attacks in
2015. She looked at the attacks affected Muslims worldwide and how it caused many Muslims to face increasing racist comments and criticism due to the stigma attached to Islam and terror.
UNEMPLOYMENT
As a group we also took interest in the EU referendum and thought of how it drastically effected the UK economy. This lead us to talk about unemployment and redundancy as it caused many companies to rethink their investment in the UK.
BRAINSTORM PLANNING
As a group we sat down and started to think about the different topics we could tackle in our social realism opening. We looked at current affairs and events that have been headlining recently in order to gain some inspiration. We were all engaged by topics such as the EU Referendum, the London Riots (2011), the Refugee Crisis and The France bombings and each one fit in with our own idea.
