OPENING SEQUENCE ANALYSIS

We analysed the opening titles of 8 social realism films in order to identify the conventional structure and style that social realism films use to create an effective title sequence. Each one of us analysed the opening titles of 2 films and established a timeline portraying what we noticed about the way in which these films opened. Through Kayleigh's analysis of 'Kes' and 'Straight Outta Compton', Suraiya's analysis of 'Happy-Go'Lucky' and 'Life is Sweet', Kinza's analysis of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Trainspotting' and Mustafe's analysis of 'Kidulthood' and 'Fish Tank' we came to the conclusion that our own opening titles, especially for a social realism film, should be simple and just set the scene, situation and characters instead of trying to overload the audience with information. This is because in social realism the action is kept realistic and represents the routine that ordinary people have in their lives. It also supports Todorov's theory: every narrative begins with a calm equilibrium.
